The final stage of polishing one of the Nautilus shells. The preparation to get to this stage takes days of smoothing the bronze and removing scratches. The tight spaces of the chambers make it very time consuming. Once polished the shell seems to glow, as light reflects inside the chambers and back out like 'Cat's eyes'.

Pouring bronze

Pouring the bronze into a Nautilus mold. Metal temperature approx 1100°C. Apologies for the poor safety gear, I have since managed to afford some proper stuff. (Check the blog for proof!)

The crucible holds about 12kg of molten bronze which is close to my limit for picking up in tongs and pouring. The ceramic Nautilus mold is preheated in the Electric furnace to a few hundred degrees to help the bronze flow and reduce thermal shock.
